My name is Iban Torres Xirau. Originally from Barcelona, I received a M.Sc. in Telecommunication Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and I wrote my Master Thesis about image processing in the Computer Vision department of the Technische Universität Berlin together with the Fraunhofer Institute IPK in Berlin.
In September 2013 I started working as a junior researcher in Technicolor‘s Image Processing Lab in Hannover, under the supervision of Dr. Jordi Salvador and Axel Kochale, and for one year I did research about super-resolution and fast search-structures.
I started my Ph.D. on EPID dosimetry for the MR-Linac in October 2014 in the Netherlands Kanker Institute – Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (Amsterdam) linked with the Leiden UMC and sponsored by Elekta, under the supervision of Dr. Anton Mans and Prof. Dr. Uulke van der Heide.
Electronic Portal Imaging Devices (EPIDs) are currently used to verify that radiation therapy has been delivered accordingly to the planned treatment; the aim of my research was to adapt the existing model used in conventional linacs to the newly adopted MR-Linac, correcting and dealing with all the alterations that the signal suffers on its way towards the EPID.
On September 15th 2020, I defended my Ph.D. thesis ‘Patient-specific QA in MRGRT: 3D in-vivo EPID dosimetry for the Unity MR-linac’ by videoconference, and was awarded the doctoral degree at the Leiden University. Unfortunately, the current situation did not allow me to enjoy the live ceremony in the historical building at Leiden University, but somehow I was still surrounded by family, friends and colleagues.
Since June 2020, I am working at Alma Medical in Barcelona as a medical imaging engineer. My current project focuses on the development of medical imaging software in the scope of Perfusion Computed Tomography (PCT) for stroke diagnosis. To this purpose, the processing of pCT studies and the further computation of functional maps is mainly performed in python, and the implementation of this work on a Django environment is being developed for its integration to Alma’s cloud platform.
My research interests on computer vision include: algorithms, signal prediction, image processing, machine learning, deep learning and empirical models.
My other hobbies are: playing with my Raspberry PI and Flotilla from PIMORONI, traveling, playing decent football, and oil painting.
Other honours: Sabadell Titius Champion 2018.
